There is a growing demand for textbooks that are available to students free of cost, online and worldwide, or for reference works for the daily work of scientists. At the same time, collaboration and active exchange of knowledge in all scientific disciplines are increasingly important. Living textbooks are complex structured text- and handbooks enriched with non-textual materials (illustrations, videos etc and the underlying research data) that are produced in direct exchange of knowledge and continued dynamically. This means that they can be updated in free cycles and published independently of publishing houses. Transparency and the meaningful re-use of research findings can be improved as well as the worldwide dissemination of and free access to scientific content.
Currently, The Living Textbook of Hand Surgery is under development as a pilot project.
